Institutionalized

I intervened the space within the Institution with the intention of promoting a more orderly circulation, using the action of dividing the staircase in half through clear signage (you go up on your right, you go down on your right). However, the intervention took an unexpected turn by using the University's shield as a dividing element. This shield was formed on each step until it was completed at the top of the staircase.

The message behind this intervention addressed issues of identity, belonging and, in some ways, memory. It was intriguing to discover that the work remained in place for a considerable time, despite the University's initial reluctance towards interventions on campus. It could be assumed, with quite certainty, that the acceptance of the work was due to its connection with the university shield, which exempted it from being perceived as a "vandalic" action.
