Yessica Leaño is a Colombian artist who resides in the capital, Bogotá. She is an interdisciplinary artist who works with various media, ranging from sculpture with ceramics, sawdust, and recycled materials to drawing with water and ink.
She is passionate about creating, which is why she does not limit herself to a single style, technique, or medium. Since her university studies, she has been interested in discovering her essence through Art, and for this reason, she dedicated her university thesis to experimenting with a material very close to her, which is wood shavings, as her family environment has been professionally involved in the wood furniture industry. From there, she experimented with the shavings after noticing how large quantities of this material were discarded as waste by the factory, ending up in the trash. This led her to create Essentia, a sculpture of a felled tree trunk made entirely from wood shavings, which is currently exhibited in one of the spaces at her Alma Mater, the Universidad de los Andes, in Bogotá.
Her interest then expanded to concerns about the body, creating for her Master's thesis an entire exploration of the relationship between the body and sports, as the latter has been very present throughout her life. As a result, she received an honorable mention for her Master's thesis in Fine and Visual Arts with the project titled, “Don't Quit, Suffer Now and Live the Rest of Your Life as a Champion” Muhammad Ali.
In recent years, her interests have shifted towards painting, exploring oil, watercolor, and eventually focusing on drawing, particularly in the technique of crosshatching. This technique not only opened doors to a new world of creativity but also, in January 2023, marked the beginning of an ambitious project: a 365-day drawing challenge. This challenge, which demands daily dedication, was born with a clear purpose: to explore the endless possibilities of drawing while connecting with other fascinating subjects.
It was in 2023 when she decided that each year would have a new theme, starting with one of her great passions: history. Throughout that year, she illustrated a historical event each day with the aim of teaching or reminding people of events through her drawings. In 2024, the challenge took a different direction with a focus on fruits and vegetables, not only to capture their shape and texture but also to explore their origins and the story behind each one. Now, in 2025, the challenge continues with a new chapter: arthropods. Through each illustration, she aims to raise awareness of these small creatures while, as a community, discovering the fascinating details of their life. Year after year, she plans to select a different theme with the goal of building a sort of “visual library” that combines art, knowledge, and a passion for learning. For this reason, she invites people to follow her work and discover, through her drawings, not only her art but also the fascinating subjects that each year brings.
Yessica Leaño graduated as a Business Administrator (2012) and Master of Arts (2014) from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá. In 2019, she obtained her Master's degree in Fine and Visual Arts from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
