This drawing is inspired by the death of Benkos Biohó, the leader of the runaway slaves in San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia. Enslaved, captured, and sold upon arriving in Cartagena de Indias, he led the rebellion in 1599, until the disputes ended around 1613, when the men of Palenque obtained recognition of their autonomy and a license to freely enter the city of Cartagena de Indias. He was arrested and hanged two years later, on March 16, 1621, accused of contempt and of continuing the slave uprising.
